Experiences is an information fair organized by Singaporean students in US universities. The event has 2 objectives: for current and past US university students to share insights on the US education with prospective students, beyond what admissions booklets can proffer, as well as to prepare incoming students for their initial experience in the United States.
First launched as Experiences 2000, held on 22nd July 2000 at the Orchard Parade Hotel, it drew a response of approximately 600 students and received positive press coverage. It was organized by a volunteer group of EDB scholars, and was made possible through the main sponsorship of Contact Singapore. Last year, Experiences 2003 was held in the Suntec City Convention Center on 26th July 2003, and drew an overwhelming response of an estimated 1,500 prospective and incoming students. All this was made possible by the generous funding of our sponsors, and the Experiences 2004 committee hopes achieve similar accomplishments yet again.
The objectives of Experiences 2004 are to inform, share and advise. We seek to help two main groups of students: prospective applicants and incoming students. We will do this by facilitating sharing by current and past students, through the convention and seminar portions, all in a centralized and convenient location. For prospective applicants, we wish to inform of the vast educational opportunities available in the US, demystify the applications process and share with them personal experiences on the US education system. For incoming students, we will give them a taste of what they are about to experience, give them tips for integration, to help them avoid the many pitfalls that plague students going overseas.
In all cases, we place emphasis on providing the Singaporean perspective, something that would be impossible to find in books or the Internet. Experiences will provide a wealth of opinions and insights, and should give participants an excellent starting point for their own research. Having been through the system, we are best placed to answer common questions most students may have, as well as to highlight certain issues they may not have thought of yet. This, in summary, is what Experiences aims to achieve.
